The Best Vegan Yeast Donut Recipe!

Are you afraid you won’t be able to eat donuts now that you’re vegan? Don’t worry! This vegan donut recipe is exactly what you need to satisfy your donut craving!

Are Vegan Donuts good?

Absolutely! Honestly you’d never know the difference. Vegan donuts are made from exactly the same ingredients as any other donut except they don’t contain dairy or eggs. In fact, because they don’t contain dairy or eggs, these donuts are way easier to make and also cheap too!

Should I bake or fry my donuts?

It’s completely up to you! Personally, I do enjoy a good cake donut but my preferred donut is a yeast donut because they are light, fluffy, and just literally, melt in your mouth!

Do I need a deep fryer to fry my donuts?

No, not at all! Although having a deep fryer is convenience it is certainly not necessary for this recipe. I would however suggest that you have a thermometer you can gauge your oil in your pot however to ensure that the temperature is just right. This, aside from your yeast rising, is the most important part of making yeast donuts. If the oil is too hot, it will crisp the outside of the dough of your donut but leave the dough on the inside undercooked, so if anything, make sure you definitely have a thermometer to read the temperature of the oil before dunking your donuts (did you get the reference there!)

Quick Tips for the perfect donuts:

-Make sure you have a thermometer to test the temperature of your oil

-Don’t add too much flour to the recipe. If you do, your donuts will turn out dense with a consistency of biscuits rather than light and fluffy donuts.

-Let your donuts cool for about 10 minutes before decorating them if you plan to add additional icing or sprinkles to them. If your donuts are not cool enough and you start to add your icing, the icing will melt and so will your sprinkles. You don’t want a sad looking donut!

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 2 packets of rapid rise yeast

  • 1 tsp sea salt

  • 1 tsp sugar + 1/4 cup sugar

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 cups vegetable oil

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp almond milk

  • Warm 1 cup of water (it should feel like lukewarm bath water) on the stove. Pour in 2 packets of rapid rise yeast, 1 tsp sea salt, and 1 tsp sugar. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until mixture has bubbled. This means your yeast is ALIVE! 😯

  • Add 1/3 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup sugar, and 2 cups flour. Mix together, the dough should be thick now. Add another 1/2 cup flour to the mix until the dough is smooth enough to roll into a big ball.

  • Flour a surface to knead your dough. Continue to add a sprinkle of flour if dough is too sticky, you want the dough to be lightly floured so you can easily roll it out without your dough sticking to the rolling pin, but be very careful with this as to not add too much extra flour or else your dough will be too dense.

  • Roll your dough out about a 1/2 inch thick. Cut donuts out with a donut cutter and let dough rise for 5-10 minutes.

  • While your dough rises, place enough oil in a pot to submerge your donut to fry. With a thermometer test your oil to make sure it is at 375 degrees before frying your donuts. I used a donut hole first to test the oil.

  • Fry your donuts until your dough has turned a golden brown on each side. Place on a paper towel and let cool.

Glaze:

For your glaze, mix 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar with 1 tsp almond milk. Dip your donuts in the glaze on each side and place on drying rack to cool. Enjoy friends!
